    Christophe Bugaud Ph.D, HDR - christophe.bugaud [at] cirad.fr

Current job: CIRAD, Food Science Researcher on sensory quality of tropical crops, RTBfoods sensory focal point

Main research interests: For over 20 years, Christophe has specialized in understanding the determinism of sensory quality in dairy products (cheese, thesis) and fruits (banana, mango and plantain). During 13 years spent in the French West Indies, he was involved in identifying the physico-chemical determinants of sensory (appearance, colour, texture, flavour, aromas), nutritional (minerals, polyphenols) and technological (storability) quality in bananas. He characterised hybrids from the banana breeding programme created by CIRAD and developed methodologies for their evaluation. On both bananas and mangoes, he was interested in the pre- and post-harvest factors impacting the final quality of the products. He also participates in the development of crops (banana, mango, RTB) in the Caribbean and Africa through expertise, training and specific studies aimed at improving the quality of products.

Boiled Cassava - kawukisezirobert [at] gmail.com

Current job: Principal Research Officer (Plant Breeding), National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), Uganda.

Main research interests: Studying relationships between plant phenotypes (end-user traits) and genotypes and using tools, principles and techniques available within the realms of plant breeding, all with intention of improving crop value for benefit of humankind. Accordingly, I have since 2000 undertaken crop research on staple and/or leverage commodities including soybean, banana and cassava, and thus attained islands of success!

I began my research journey on soybean between 2000 and 2002, before taking up a position at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA-Uganda) to work on banana between 2003 and 2004. However, since 2005 I have been employed by NARO as a cassava breeder and based at National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI), Namulonge; through this duty, I have been able to officially release nine cassava varieties between 2011 and 2015; one variety NAROCASS 1 has been widely disseminated by national programmes of Tanzania and Rwanda. As of this writing, I am keenly involved in: a) re-organizing cassava breeding operations so as to breed for defined “product profiles’ and b) adopting proven tools, methods and approaches that increase cassava breeding efficiency and relevance. I cherish science communication and have thus, published extensively in a number of refereed journals.

Béla Teeken is an associate social and gender scientist at IITA and is based in Ibadan Nigeria. He is especially interested in how the biophysical environment, local institutions, and culture shape and determine local agricultural innovations and how such innovations and practices relate to those of formal scientific research. He worked shortly on grassroots innovations at the NGO ‘Sristi’ in India, before pursuing his PhD research at Wageningen University. His PhD research combined social science with plant science and genetics studying the interaction between rice genotypes, ecological and sociocultural factors within farmer seed innovation, and selection pathways among different ethnic minorities. After his PhD research he worked at IITA as a post-doctoral fellow on interdisciplinary research including social segmentation and specifically gender, in relation to user-preferred cassava trait preferences. Within the Nextgen Cassava and RTBfoods and CGIAR RTB CRP projects he is now working together with biophysical scientist to further study gender and other social dynamics in relation to RTB crop production and processing to inform and reform CGIAR breeding programs.
