“Consumers have their say: assessing preferred quality traits of roots, tubers and cooking bananas, and implications for breeding”

It took less than a year for the RTBfoods project to get this special issue published in the International Journal of Food Science and Technology (IJFST). The idea was launched in February 2020 in Kampala (Uganda) at the project's annual meeting.

IJFST special issue is online

Presentation - It consists of 4 distinct parts

The first one, a "Registered Reports", concerns the publication of the RTBfoods methodology for capturing and analysing stakeholders' preferences in the root and tuber value chain. This methodological publication is accompanied by eleven "Original Articles" on RTB-based food product profiles selected by the project. All partners on the ground without exception have contributed to this effort to write and promote their work.

State-of-the-art articles on trends in the global RTB market, or on the importance of varietal adoption of RTBs for value chain actors in Africa were included. Five bibliographic studies are referenced as "Invited Reviews" in the special issue.

The call for contributions for this special issue has found a strong response. Eighteen additional "Original articles" complete this special issue of the IJFST journal.

The CGIAR CRP-RTB project contributed to the planning and funding of seventeen works published in this special issue.

The Editorial is signed by Dominique Dufour, project leader (CIRAD), in collaboration with Clair Hershey, scientific editor of this issue, Bruce Hamaker, professor emeritus in food sciences (Purdue University, West Lafayette, Illinois, USA) and Jim Lorenzen (Senior Program Officer, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation).

Articles for everyone

The 30 invited publications from the RTBfoods project and CRP-RTB are now all freely available, edited and laid out in the final version by the Journal's production team. The costs of the open access have been covered by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through the Foundation's Chronos platform. For the 6 articles external to CRP-RTB or RTBfoods project, published in the special issue, only one is accessible for free, the five others remain in restricted access.
